General Information
Founded in 1872, Aberystwyth was the first university institution to be established in Wales. Today, it has over 7,000 registered students, including over 1,100 postgraduates across eighteen academic departments.

The institution is committed to developing its reputation as a provider of high quality teaching and excellence in research. It aims to fulfil its special responsibility for the educational needs of Wales, and to maintain and develop partnerships with industry and other institutions both within Wales and beyond, and also to promote collaboration in teaching and research between the constituent parts of the University of Wales.

Facilities

Aberystwyth has an excellent range of learning facilities to help you to succeed in your chosen subject.

Libraries
When you become a student at Aberystwyth, you will enjoy access to a modern, well-equipped library service which has seating for over 1,300 readers, houses more than 700,000 volumes and subscribes to more than 3,500 current periodicals. A wide range of networked databases and other electronic information sources are also available to you. The main Hugh Owen Library is open for up to 74.5 hours a week during term time and trained library and computing staff are constantly on hand to assist you with enquiries and provide assistance when needed.

The National Library of Wales
This Library is one of Britain's great copyright libraries entitled to receive a copy of every book published in the UK. It serves not only the nation of Wales but the north of England as there are no other copyright libraries closer than Oxford, Cambridge or London. As a student at Aberystwyth you have free access to the National Library's 6 million volumes, maps and prints.

Computing Facilities
The University provides a wide range of the latest computing facilities to meet your requirements. A large number of workstations are located on campus and in halls of residence providing unlimited 24 hour access. Aberystwyth's local area network serves as a gateway to the Internet and the World Wide Web. There is an extensive range of software available to you. These range from word-processing packages and databases to design and artistic packages. Specialist staff are on hand to provide you with help and guidance. A wide range of short intensive courses are organised to ensure that you get the most from the services.

Language Laboratory
The Language Laboratory offers excellent facilities for the intensive practice of linguistic skills. The Laboratory is based upon sophisticated computing packages which assist you to learn a wide variety of languages (including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Welsh and other languages).

Student Life

Enjoyment
Aberystwyth has a large range of pubs and clubs which extend a warm welcome to students. The Union's bars have a range of discounts complemented by regular promotions. The town is also fortunate in having an extensive range of eating places ranging from competitively priced and intimate bistros to the high quality restaurants one associates with a major tourist centre.

Entertainment
Aber's legendary entertainment's include regular theme and party nights, club nights and gigs. Recent appearances include Divine Comedy, Space, Jools Holland, the Stereophonics, Mansun, Catatonia, The Bootleg Beatles, Emma B, Radio One's Mark and Lard and Steve Lamac. In addition the Guild organises the annual May Ball. To find out what's on as well as information about other activities, opportunities and student views, the Guild produces regular magazines - The Courier and our online newsletter 'Dragon Online'.

The Arts Centre
Our Arts Centreis the largest in mid and west Wales. It was recently extended in a £4 million project. Over 460,000 people visit the Art Centre every year to enjoy its wide and varied programme of events. These range from drama to classical music, dance, world music, films, children's shows, literature readings, live bands to opera and comedy. The Arts Centre's exhibition programme is one of the few in Wales acknowledged by the Arts Council as a Centre of Excellence and offers you an excellent programme of exhibitions. There are many courses in art, drama, dance and music throughout the year, which are very popular with both students and the local community.

Societies
Think of a pastime and you can be fairly certain that one of the University's 160 clubs and societies will be involved with it. You will discover that Clubs and Societies are a buoyant and thriving feature of student life at Aberystwyth. They range from tiddlywinks and chess to political societies and you can access all of them through the Union of Students.

The Music Centre
You will find that Aberystwyth is rich in opportunities for student musicians. There are numerous choirs, symphony and chamber orchestras, brass and wind bands and plenty of chances for music-making of all kinds. Instrumental and vocal tuition is also available. The Music Centre houses practice rooms and the elegant Joseph Parry Hall, the venue for a regular series of lunchtime recitals - a recent national survey gave Aberystwyth a top rating for the number of concerts. Orchestral musicians can compete for the valuable Music Bursaries.
